I tend to scroll mindlessly through social media quite a bit, but every so often, something genuinely catches my eye. Just a couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a fascinating mini-documentary on YouTube while I was waiting for my train. It popped up in my recommended feed, probably because the algorithm knows I'm a bit of a history buff. The video was about a forgotten artistic technique called "Kintsugi," which is a traditional Japanese method of repairing broken pottery using a lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of trying to conceal the cracks and pretend the item was never broken, the artist in the video painstakingly pieced the fragments back together, highlighting the fractures with glittering gold veins. The narrator explained the underlying philosophy, which essentially revolves around embracing flaws and imperfections, rather than discarding things the moment they break. I found it absolutely captivating for a couple of reasons. On a purely aesthetic level, watching the tedious, delicate process of restoration was incredibly soothing—almost mesmerizing. But more importantly, the metaphor hit really close to home. In a world that is obsessed with flawless perfection and a disposable "throw-away" culture, the idea that something can become even more beautiful and valuable precisely because it has been broken and repaired was incredibly profound. I ended up sharing the link with several friends as soon as I got home, and it actually sparked a really deep conversation in our group chat!
