🎙️ Band 9 Model Answer

A really memorable collaborative effort I participated in took place during my final year of university. Our capstone assignment for an environmental science module was to design a comprehensive strategy to reduce plastic waste on our actual campus, and then pitch it to the university board. Our group was quite eclectic, comprising four people from completely different disciplines. There was a finance major, a graphics design student, a civil engineering student, and myself, bringing an environmental policy background. Right from the get-go, we realized that if we didn't establish clear roles, it would be sheer chaos. I naturally stepped into the role of project coordinator since I was the most familiar with the core subject matter. My primary job was to synthesize all our individual research and ensure everyone met our tight deadlines. But beyond that, I act as a mediator when opinions inevitably clashed—particularly between our finance guy, who wanted a low-budget approach, and the designer, who wanted highly ambitious aesthetic interventions. The project ended up being a roaring success. Not only did we secure the highest grade in the cohort, but the board actually adopted one of our proposals to implement a "mug-library" system at the campus coffee shops. I attribute our success entirely to the diversity of our team. Rather than working in an echo chamber where everyone thinks the same way, the friction between our different academic perspectives allowed us to troubleshoot blind spots early on. It really taught me that effective teamwork isn't about avoiding conflict, but managing it constructively.
